Cornwall Adult Education Service delivery model
Cornwall Adult Education Service is a community-based organisation which makes use of over 350 venues across Cornwall to reflect its commitment to make learning as accessible as possible.
The service seeks to provide a learning programme which enables all adults in Cornwall to develop their skills, knowledge, judgement, interests and creativity, whatever their particular needs.
Cornwall Adult Education Service started delivering functional ICT in the first instance to fill a specific gap that they found in level 1 ICT provision. Having researched options, they found that the functionality aspect of the Functional Skills qualification was particularly appropriate for their adult learners.
They are now rolling out functional mathematics and English to two groups, working on the basis of 40 guided learning hours, and have handpicked learners and tutors to deliver these.
The organisation chose a combination of embedded and discrete delivery which depended on the audience. Most delivery will be discrete for adults as part of a larger literacy and numeracy programme. Delivery is more embedded within ICT, and ICT tutors deliver level 1, not SFL tutors.
There is also separate work being undertaken with 16-18 year olds on Foundation Learning programmes, where the organisation has identified how to embed functional mathematics and English for these learners.
